Tax split
Goods and Services Tax, or GST, is the indirect tax that applies to most goods and services sold in India. It replaced a long list of central and state taxes from 1 July 2017. Depending on the item, GST is charged at one of seven rates, 0, 0.25, 3, 5, 12, 18, or 28 percent.
CGST, SGST, and IGST explained
When a sale happens within the same state, GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) collected by the centre and State GST (SGST) collected by the state. So 18 percent GST is recorded as 9 percent CGST plus 9 percent SGST.
When a sale crosses state borders, the full tax is charged as Integrated GST (IGST), which the centre later shares with the destination state.
Inclusive vs exclusive amounts
If a price is GST exclusive, the tax is added on top. ₹10,000 plus 18 percent GST equals ₹11,800. If a price is GST inclusive, the tax is already baked into the figure. The base price is found by dividing by 1.18, which gives roughly ₹8,475 with ₹1,525 of GST.
Worked example
A Bangalore based business sells a software subscription worth ₹50,000 to a Delhi customer. Since the supply is inter state, it charges 18 percent IGST, which works out to ₹9,000. The total invoice value is ₹59,000. If the same sale was made within Karnataka, the invoice would show ₹4,500 CGST and ₹4,500 SGST instead.
